Motor vehicle preferences prevail in all nations depending on buyers. Between 2014 and 2016, Uganda’s motor market has experienced radical changes and here are some of the models that were deemed best.

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

In January 2014, a total of 50 Toyota Land Cruiser Prados had been sold. The model held motor shares of more than 37.5%, and it was closely followed by Toyota Hilux and Mitsubishi L200. The total sales in January was 140 vehicle units.

Toyota Hilux & Land Cruiser

Toyota managed to secure top position in Ugandan market since in 2014 (the whole year), Toyota experienced 19% increase in sales making it to secure 51.1% of the market. Toyota Hilux model took the lead in the nameplate as it took 20.2% shares and Land Cruiser followed it. Mitsubishi closely followed Toyota after overtaking Nissan.

Toyota Hilux and Nissan Hardbody

During the first quarter of 2015, Toyota continued to lead the market having 38.1% shares and it was closely followed by Tata at 16.2%. The second runners up was Mitsubishi at 15.1%. In terms of model, Toyota Hilux was the most sold brand of Toyota as it contributed to 18.8% shares above Nissan Hardbody and Mitsubishi L200.

Pickup trucks

Pickup trucks’ sales dominated Ugandan market between January and June 2015. The first half of 2015, Toyota still dominated Ugandan market with 37.4% shares and Indian Tata was the first runners up with 14.9% shares. Mitsubishi had 13.6% while Nissan 11.7%. Finally, Ford had 8.1% market shares. Toyota Hilux got 17.5% of the shares while Nissan Hardy was at 10.1%. Mitsubishi L200 had 8.2% and Ford 7.5%. Toyota Land cruiser was the fifth on the list of sales.

Toyota, Tata and Nissan

During the third quarter of 2015, Toyota still dominated the market with over 35% shares followed by Tata at 16.3%, Nissan had 12% as Mitsubishi 11.2% and Ford at 9.9%.

Toyota Wins

By the end of 2015, Toyota Hilux dominated Ugandan market but didn’t gain grounds so much. It had shares of 36.5%. The order of the other vehicles in top five were Mitsubishi, Nissan, Ford and Tata.

Toyota continued to dominate Ugandan market by having 39.3% market shares while Mitsubishi was at 15.9% during the first half of 2016. Ford and Tata tied at 9.8% while Nissan, Isuzu and Great Wall followed the rest in that order. Toyota Hilux model continued to command the market as it had 21.6% shares while Mitsubishi L200 had 13.7% shares.

By the end of 2016, new vehicle sales in Uganda was 11% and Toyota’s market shares went to 40.8%. It was followed by Mitsubishi, Tata, Nissan, Isuzu and Foton. Based on model, Toyota Hilux led the rest as it had 24.1% shares while Mitsubishi L200 was at 9.8%.
